Woolen Mills

The Scottish Borders region has long been noted for its textile industry, and today several mills welcome visitors.   Lochcarron of Scotland Visitor Centre in Selkirk offers visitors tours of its mill, together with an extensive shop. It is a founder member of Scotland‘s Cashmere Club, and has received UK Fashion‘s Top Gold Award. Lochcarron now produces the world‘s largest range of authentic tartans and highland wear, worn by Ewan McGregor among others, and it supplies cloth to leading designers such as Vivien Westwood, Ralph Lauren and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Hawick Cashmere Company Ltd manufactures finest quality knitwear, supplying retailers and designers in London, Paris and New York.  It runs its own visitor centre at its mill in Hawick, selling cashmere knitwear in an amazing range of colours and styles, both classis and contemporary. It’s a great place to find a genuine bargain!

Peter Scott & Co. Ltd has been supplying quality knitwear around the world from Hawick since 1878, and has been based in the Buccleuch Street mills since 1898.  Its factory shop offers an excellent range of quality knitwear, and visitors can learn more about the industry by taking the factory tour.

Pringle of Scotland was established in Hawick in the 19th century and is well known as one of the leading golfing wear brands. Nowadays it is also a leading fashion brand, holding catwalk shows in both London and Milan. The shop is located in Glebe Mill, Noble Place in Hawick, TD9 9QE.

There are several other shops selling Border tweed and knitwear. Just outside Hawick Wrights of Trowmill has its own working weaving mill, while Wiltonburn Country Cashmere, housed in a converted barn, displays designer cashmere knitwear by the internationally famous designer Valerie Louthan among others. These, and other shops, are well worth a visit.

There are lots of individual independent retailers nearby in the local towns of Biggar, Peebles, Moffat and Thornhill. And of course everything you might expect in the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
