Skirling is well placed. Just far enough off the beaten track to enjoy total seclusion, yet near enough to other pretty villages, bustling towns and of course the main centres of Edinburgh and Glasgow, both of which can be reached in around 45 minutes br car or bus.
Just a brisk walk from the village of Skirling, a worthwhile venture, especially if you are interested in art. The Broughton Gallery, which was established 1976, has a changing exhibition of work, which offers, for sale, work by contemporary British artists and makers. You can also get a nice hot drink and homemade cake to re-charge batteries before heading back!
MelroseThis lovely market town lies a short drive from Skirling and provides for a surprisingly pleasant day out. Described as a 'pop up book' of local history, complete with ruined Roman fort, medieval abbey and Georgian market streets lined with bakeries selling just what you need for a picnic on the banks of the river!
The historic burgh of Lanark was the location of the first meeting of the Scots Parliament in 978. Today it is one of the most important towns in The Clyde Valley and has a bustling market. Lanark Market is one of Scotland's largest farming markets. A few hundred years after the first Scots Parliament took place in Lanark, William 'Braveheart' Wallace resided in the town. There are tributes to Wallace's fight for freedom in Lanark.
Our closest town, with attractions including an operating Victorian Puppet Theatre, and Gladstone Court, from the 19th century, just one of five of Biggar's award winning museums.
Situated just twenty minutes north of Skirling along the main route to Edinburgh lies this attractive village. One of the larger villages, West Linton has a good selection of everyday shops as well as coffee shops, cafes and a local pub. The village green has a great play park for children and many walks can be enjoyed from the centre, around the church and river.
An historic and pretty country town. Its oldest site, the Cross Kirk, dates back to 1320 and is preserved as an ancient monument. A mile west of Peebles is Neidpath Castle and Museum, a 14th century fortess, with magnificient views over the River Tweed.
